How to Write Better AI Media Prompts

As a creator, the challenge isn't just having an idea, it's finding the right words to turn what you imagine into something an AI model can actually create. How do you describe a character so they remain recognizable? How do you capture a specific mood, composition, or visual style? And once you get a prompt that works, how do you adapt it for the next idea without starting over?
Modularity is the key. By breaking prompts into reusable templates and building blocks, you can spend less time rewriting and more time creating. In this guide, we'll show you how to structure effective prompts, plan videos as timed shot lists, lock subjects with reference sheets, save your best ideas as templates, and use them to quickly create consistent variations for new characters, scenes, styles, and stories.
Core Prompt Structure
Lead with the subject, finish with style. Put the main subject and action first, then define the visual style near the end. This generally produces more coherent results.
Think like a cinematographer. A reliable sequence is subject → action → emotion → environment → lighting → camera → style:

Let's put together an example:
A weathered fisherman repairing a net, quiet and reflective, inside a small

For image-to-video, prompt the change. When animating an existing image, describe the movement or transformation rather than repeating everything already visible. Example:
He slowly looks toward the horizon as the boat gently rocks, with a subtle
breeze moving his jacket.
Practical Prompt Elements
Describe lighting with physics. Specific light sources and behavior are more useful than generic terms such as cinematic lighting. Try soft window light from camera left, warm practical lamp behind the subject, subtle rim light, deep natural shadows.
Keep one primary motion per shot. Trying to animate every element at once often creates unnatural movement. Focus each shot on one dominant action, such as the woman turns her head slowly toward the window while her hair moves slightly in the breeze.
Use specific lenses and camera moves. Lens choices influence framing and visual character. 35mm anamorphic suggests a wider cinematic perspective, while 100mm macro creates a compressed, intimate close-up. Camera instructions such as slow dolly forward or locked-off tripod shot further define the result.
Prefer static cameras when reliability matters. A locked-off camera combined with a detailed scene often produces more convincing video than several simultaneous camera movements.
Timed Storyboards
Treat a video prompt like a shot list on a timeline. Timed storyboards are used to generate videos by defining each shot's start and end on the timeline. Instead of describing the whole film in one paragraph, break the video into ordered shots and give each one a clear time range, framing, action, and camera instruction.
Use one primary action per timed shot. Models handle short, focused beats more reliably than long overlapping actions. If a character walks, turns, and speaks in the same five seconds, split those moments into separate shots whenever the tool allows.
Shot list format
Write each shot as a compact entry with the same fields every time. A practical format is:

Keep ranges contiguous and non-overlapping unless you intentionally want a dissolve or crossfade. Prefer exact boundaries such as 0:00–0:05 and 0:05–0:10 over vague wording like then later or for a while.
Example timed storyboard
Suppose you want a 12-second night street beat with three shots:

When you convert the storyboard into generation prompts, keep the same identity, location, and lighting language across shots. Change only what must change: framing, camera move, and the single action inside that time window.
Prompt each shot from the list, not from memory. For image-to-video or multi-clip workflows, turn one storyboard row into one prompt. Example for the middle shot:

Carry continuity between shots. Mention what must stay the same: wardrobe, weather, time of night, lens family, and color grade. If shot 2 begins where shot 1 ended, say so explicitly: continues from previous shot, same street, same rain intensity, Maya already under the shop sign.
Time the cut, not the entire movie. A timed storyboard is most useful when each row answers three questions: when does this shot start, when does it end, and what is the one thing the viewer should notice in that window?
Prompt References and Reusable Templates

Naming prompts
A prompt name is defined in the first comment of the prompt, and Prompt Studio will automatically add its name after the identifier. Comments begin with ##, for example in this prompt:

The first comment establishes the prompt's name as Character: Maya. Additional ## comments can be used for notes or documentation inside the prompt.
Referencing a prompt
Once a prompt is saved, another prompt can reference it using its identifier: @12345("Character: Maya") The referenced prompt is inserted wherever the reference appears. This makes reusable characters, locations, lighting setups, camera styles, and other building blocks easy to share and combine. For example:

Creating variants with replacements
A prompt reference can also replace swappable variables in the referred prompt. Variables are usually written in square brackets by convention, such as [hair] or [clothing]. For example, suppose the referenced prompt contains:

You can create a variant by reference without changing the original prompt:

The replacements are separated by commas and use the operator => to produce a new version of the prompt, where:

The original reusable prompt remains unchanged. This makes templates useful for creating consistent variations while keeping the underlying building block centralized.
Why use prompt references?
Prompt references make a prompt library modular and shareable. Instead of copying a character description into every scene, you can reference the same character template. Instead of rewriting a lighting setup for every shot, you can reference a saved lighting prompt.
Because references use identifiers, prompt names do not have to be globally unique. Different creators can publish prompts with the same name, and each can be referenced independently.
Identity and Consistency
Create a template library. Define reusable details such as age, hairstyle, clothing, facial features, proportions, and distinctive accessories. Store this information as a reusable prompt in your Plyry library, then reference it from scene prompts instead of rewriting the same description every time.
For example, a reusable character prompt might be named Character: Maya and contain swappable variables:

Separate identity from the shot. Keeping character identity, environment, and cinematography as reusable components makes it easier to change one element without destabilizing the others.
For real people, separate generation from identity replacement when necessary. If a close-up reference or recognizable face causes moderation issues, generate the scene without the identifying face and perform an appropriate face replacement or compositing step afterward. This also makes it easier to reuse the same finished shot across different identities.
Reference Sheets for Consistency
A reference sheet is a visual identity lock. Text prompts describe who someone is; a reference sheet shows it. Use one sheet as the source of truth for a character, creature, product, or prop whenever you need the same subject to stay recognizable across many images or video shots.
Attach the sheet, then describe only what changes. In tools that accept image references, upload the sheet and keep the written identity block short and stable. Let the scene prompt handle pose, action, environment, and camera. Do not rewrite the face, outfit, or proportions in every new prompt unless the story requires a deliberate change.
What belongs on the sheet
A useful sheet is readable at a glance. Favor clear panels over a crowded collage.

Optional strips help for bigger projects: a wardrobe row, a prop row, or a scale comparison next to a known object. Keep text labels short and placed outside the subject whenever possible.
How to prompt a reference sheet
Ask for a production sheet, not a hero portrait. Be explicit about layout, angles, expression, lighting, and what must stay identical across panels.

If a single generation collapses the panels, generate the front view first, then create matching side, back, and expression images with the same identity block and the front view as the reference. Assemble the final sheet afterward. Consistency of the parts matters more than generating the whole grid in one pass.
How to use the sheet in later prompts
- Approve one canonical sheet. Save the version you trust and stop iterating on identity once it is locked.
- Reference the sheet on every related generation. Prefer the sheet over random previous outputs that already contain scene lighting or busy backgrounds.
- Repeat a short identity lock in text. Example: same character as reference sheet, identical face, hair, coat, and proportions; do not redesign.
- Change only the shot variables. Pose, action, location, lens, and lighting belong in the scene prompt; identity stays in the sheet.
- Reuse the same sheet across a timed storyboard. For video, feed the sheet into each clip so wardrobe and facial structure survive cuts.

What usually breaks consistency. Busy backgrounds, beauty lighting, fashion poses, multiple characters on one sheet, and rewriting core traits between prompts all cause drift. Keep the sheet neutral, keep the identity language fixed, and treat the sheet as infrastructure rather than a finished artwork.
Workflow and Troubleshooting
Plan the emotional arc before writing prompts. Define what the audience should feel scene by scene before choosing locations or camera directions. For example: curiosity → tension → surprise → relief. Then build each prompt around that progression.
Use templates with swappable variables. Structured prompts make results more repeatable than starting from scratch. Give each tool one job. Let the generation system focus on what it does best, such as atmosphere, environments, motion, and composition. Handle specialized identity work in a separate post-production step when needed. This can reduce failed generations, save credits, and make the workflow more controllable.
